How do I chat with hotmail users with my gmail account?

My friend has a gmail account and is able to chat with my hotmail account. My friend is not the most computer literate person so I don’t think they did anything really fancy. Could somebody help me?

    at this time you can’t chat with hotmail users using gmail BUT you can download Google talk and invite your hotmail users to chat and they’ll be sent an email to ask them to join gmail.
